Well it was an excellent Christmas for me this year. I acquired my first split beetle December 10th. I have been wanting one for a few years now but did not get real serious about it until a few months back. I have several friends who own splits and I put the word out that I was in the market. Within a matter of days a deal was struck and I brought the 51 home. I am lucky that I am good friends with the past two owners, so I do have around 30-32 years of ownership history. The person I bought the car from owned it for the past 10-12 years and the previous owner 20 yrs. The car sat in dry storage up until the last 1 to 2 years. Unfortunately the car got flooded during this past year. Right now my goal is to reverse the water damage , and make it road worthy.

The car had an outside respray in 2007-2008. Inside the car is still original paint and a very old original style interior. I also believe that the motor is numbers matching, and I have ordered a Birth Certificate to confirm this. Vin and Motor numbers are both 3/51 so more than likely it is the original motor. My ultimate goal down the road is to do a complete restoration, but I am going to finish Courtney's Ghia before I start blowing the split apart. I do plan to drive the heck out of it though until that time.

So I got the original motor pulled apart cleaned and packed away. For right now I am going to build an Okrasa Styled engine to propel the beast. I might rebuild the 25 later on.

As you can see I had some help

Got the front beam out. Boy this thing has not been maintained at all. The grease was sooooo dry that it practically glued everything together.
I installed new kings & links, bump stops and shocks. also sent the steering box off to Cali to have it rebuilt. Check out the tie rods.

Picked up a 36hp from Eliot for the base of the Okrasa build. Also got some nice parts in the mail.
The motor is a long block now and I am currently prepping the tins for paint. I sent the lever shocks out to New York to have rebuilt by Apple Hydraulics.

Due to the cost of rebuilding the crash box trans and since I am putting a 36er in her for now I am going to install a later model 6 volt trans. I had to buy a special nose cone to convert it so I would not have to cut into the split.

Wow, nice work Ethan! Moving right along!

Lever shocks... cool! What year did they change to tube shocks?

Sometime in April of 51 they switched to tube shocks. My car is a 3/51 so right at the cutoff
