So the story is: bear with me

Melissa has been wanting a square for over 20 years and I decided I wanted to surprise her with one for our 23rd anniversary.

This was truly an impulse buy on my part as I had just found a pristine 66 pop up for sale by a reputable seller, this wasn't posted on any classifieds but on FB as we are FB friends.

That same day he posted I made a deal and purchased the car sight unseen.

So now we had the square, only problem was it was in VA and we are in WA.

After a month of trying to get a transporter and failing due to the remote location of the car and the combination of all this stupid shit going down. We or I decided it would be a fun idea to fly down and drive the car home, 3100 miles and 10 days planned, spare parts sent, new tires shipped and installed, sellers mechanic changing the oil, adjusting the valves and generally looking things over installed (supposedly) we were set.

Fast forward to July 3rd , trip started out great, flew into Greensboro NC took a Taxi to Blairs VA and took delivery of the square.

We arrived rather late and had to install the WA plates and the rear seat-belts for our 6 yo Cobin who was coming on the trip with us.

By the time we finished it was getting late and after we discovered the headlights were out we headed to a hotel quickly. (later discovered it was the fuses)

First day of travel was great, we covered 10 hrs on the road and the car ran flawless. Stopped for the night (4th of July) in a sweet little town called Bardstown KY, rented a room for the night at an old jail turned B&B and enjoyed the fireworks and hospitality.

The following day of travel is when things turned south, two hours in discovered the engine was using more oil than normal, telltale signs of oil under the car that weren't there before and evidence of oil leaking on top of the engine pointing to the oil cooler.

Shortly after adding more oil, hitting the road again and considering options we started hearing and feeling the dreaded metal on metal of the front brakes (so much for the sellers mechanic looking over the car)

I really wasn't ready to give up yet and was prepared for some mechanical issues, found some brake pads for the front disk about an hour later (surprisingly Autozone had them) I had purchased a cheap set of tools, jack and a few other things before hitting the road.

I replaced them in the Autozone Parking lot, and hit the road to the next town who had a Vw repair shop who could more easily change the oil cooler seals for us. This guy tried his best and came in on a sunday evening: taking 5 hrs that evening to replace the seals and get us back on the road.

Seeming all was well again, engine fired up and purred like a kitten, no visible oil leaking, closed everything up loaded our crap back in and hit the road.

Of coarse by now it was 11:00 PM and thankfully those headlights were now working so were heading back into the city to get a hotel. Unfortunately this wasn't the end of our problems: quickly after stopping at Taco Bell due to not eating since breakfast the car started running very poorly, missing hesitating etc; unsure yet if it was induced by the maintenance just done, loose rocker, dirt in the fuel lines. Because shortly after pulling into the parking lot I noticed the car had been marking its trail with oil drops.

We decided in that moment to throw in the towel and try and find a transporter to pick the car up and deliver it to WA.

The next day, success finally, found a transport company who could pick it up that Tuesday- Friday, rented a car to finish our trip and arranged with the local Subaru dealer to leave it there for pick up.

All was well again, cruising in the rental Cadillac (I have good rates :) took our time, visited family in Illinois, spent a couple days in Yellowstone and made it home.

But shit wasn't done fucting with us yet, car was picked up late (this Monday) and on Tuesday we recieved word from the driver that he had driven the car roof into a low overhang bridge after having to exit the free way due to construction.

Yeah so that happened, it looks pretty bad, at least from the pics, the car is still in transit and due to us by monday.

Driver tried to be shady, offered to buy the car from us for a fair price or take it to his great body shop to be fixed; we told him to deliver the car to our shop as they specialize in vintage vehicles, he wanted to handle it outside of his insurance right on the spot when he arrived, we sent our insurance company after him and he has since changed his tune.

so now, the former pristine square will be getting a roof replacement, windshield and headliner at the very least; I am going to have them do a full exterior repaint as the current one is 10 years old and showing signs.

Thanks for sticking with the story;

miss all you guys!

Not much to report on the square yet, It has been dropped off at the body shop and is waiting its turn for work to begin, should be starting in a couple weeks.

Picked up the replacement roof, the new engine build has started, building up a little 1904 for a little more get up, tranny build has started as well. Being patient
