Good news. Upon closer inspection and after pulling out the burned/melted wires, the damage was not as bad as it looked. A bunch of new wires, new ignition switch and new headlight switch and it's back on the road.
Funny thing is, ever since I got it the alternator light would give off the dimmest glow at night with the lights on. it would get a little brighter when i stepped on the brakes. Now, no more glow (and yes it does still work).
Glad to be back in my VW. My truck is just too damned expensive for the 92 mile round trip to work
As soon as the weather starts to cool off I start working on the body.
Plan: paint by the end of the year.
