Well, as suspected, it was a rod bearing. The cam/lifters also had some serious wear. Everything else looks good.

I have another shortblock, so I'll tear it down and see if the crank & cam are useable.

That flywheel sure does look pretty! Have the case/crank been cut?

Yes it does, and so does the clutch. Although this engine has some issues, it looks like many of the parts & pieces didn't have many miles on them.

I haven't measured anything yet.... probably Saturday before I do anything else.

Making a little progress on the 36'er. Local machine shop is working the heads for me. Gonna do a nice valve job and swap in a new set of springs. This shop specializes in big inch drag race engines, but is actually very happy to do my VW heads. He says it's a nice change of pace. He's got VERY nice equipment and it really taking good care of me. He's gonna do a nice 5-angle cut... and since the heads have alot to do with power... maybe I'll have me a 38- or 39-horse motor when it's all done :hillbilly:

That is some serious equipment! I'm sure it'll be a fire-breathing motor by the time you're done with it.

Well... I FINALLY took a break from the golf course, and got my ass back in the shop. All my parts are in and I spent the day cleaning up stuff and assembling the shortblock. If all goes well, she might be running by this time next week. It's been so long since I've built an engine, that I forgot how much fun it is :D

Here are a few pics....
