Hello,

I will soon have to replace my last daily economy minded vehicle which was a toyota. (don't hate!) I sold it...
I'm looking at getting a 2000 - 2006 jetta soon for my daily driver. I've never owned a water cooled dub, I've owned toyota's since the early 1980's (before discovering VW's) because of their fuel mileage and simplicity. But I have itch for a H20 dub. I've been searching around for fuel mileage stats. I've seen the figures 21 city - 28 highway around. But I have to think those are low ball numbers.

I know a lot depends on ones driving habits, I'm not a shotgun starter and I let up and coast before braking when possible. And I'm hardly ever the fastest car on the highway!

Thanks in advance for any info you guys can provide.

I had a 2001 Jetta 1.8t that I bought new and had for several years. Mine was very reliable and a blast to drive, especially with chip, full exhaust, intake, big intercooler, Bilstein coilovers, sway bars, etc etc. But even stock it was fun. I guess the gas milage was pretty decent, but probably better in the 2.0's.
If you aren't on there already, get on vwvortex.com, that's probably the biggest online community that covers those cars. you should be able to get more info on reliability, milage, etc.
There are a few of them around my neighborhood, and every time I see them it brings back fond memories of mine.

The 1.8 is my first choice, but I don't think I'd pass up a 2.0 in good shape. I did join vwvortex last Thursday.
My wife is a hard core toyota fan, doesn't care for Volkswagens much so she's pushing for me to get another toy (camry). I've driven her moms '99 camry, I'm not interested! She was quick to point out the toy got better fuel mileage. But quietened down some when I showed the Jetta did better in the crash test results.
With my daughter now in the military were going to be taking some trips to she her and guess what well be taking! 8-)

Thanks for your input Brian, hope to meet you and the other guys at Dubs on the Hill.
