Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I saw these Bosch H4's today for $44.00

http://www.busdepot.com/0301600118

I pretty much thought these were a smoking deal and bought an extra set. I can only find Knock off's for $50.

I've got Empi H4's on my car now, I wonder if the beam is that much better from the Bosch's?

I can almost guarantee you that the Bosch is much better. I don't have experience with the Empi's specifically, but I've found most drop-in H4's to be quite poor. I recently bought a pair of German Cibie H4's for a little extra money because I was tired of the poor beam patterns in everything else I've tried.

I just read a little farther down. These are not DOT compliant in the US for vehicles other than motorcycles.

Quote:
Disclaimer: Although H4 headlights are commonplace on cars and trucks in Europe and Canada, when sold in the U.S. they must be designated as "for motorcycle or offroad use only" because the U.S. DOT does not recognize H4's for car use. Unlike most H4's, these Bosch's are DOT approved and labeled, but the approval mark applies to motorcycles. Compliance with local laws is the buyer's responsibility.

Yeah, but show me one police officer that can tell the difference between the DOT and non-DOT ones..

It would state it on the lamp itself. I know motorcycle lamps specifically state "motorcycle only" on the lens, so I don't know if they would pass inspection. I haven't lived in TX that long to know if they look for this or not. CA does not have a mandatory vehicle safety inspection. However, if you get cited by an officer, you may have to have your car inspected at a official "Brake and Lamp" station. They would look for DOT approval in this case.

I'm not trying to be a finger-wagger here, just passing along info.

Actually, I'm not sure I've ever seen a DOT H4 in the U.S. I'm not sure they're legal, and the EMPI ones and others I've seen all state 'off-road' use only.

I personally try to register all my old cars as antique vehicles here in Texas (With corresponding Year of Manufacture plates, but that's another story), so that you do not have to have the vehicle inspected yearly.

Whats the difference between "classic" and "antique" registration? I am planning on using a set of YOM plates for my 72.

My understanding is there are no special considerations for classic cars, and they still require inspection. The difference with Antique is that they are supposed to be original, or in the process of being put back to original condition.

I'll try to look up the laws later, I used to have them saved on my computer, but can't seem to find them right at the moment.
