So last night coming home from work, about 2-3 miles from home, I go to shift from 3-4 and my shifter goes slack! Pretty much instantly knew what happened. Managed to coast into a parking lot and, sure enough, the shift coupler had come apart. Probably no wonder, I think it was the original one on my car! I guess lasting 62 years isn't too bad :P Although i hope i last longer
I grabbed the part of the coupler still attached to the trans and manually put it in 3rd. Drove it home the rest of the way like that, slipping the hell out of the clutch at every stop sign and light. Glad i wasnt further from home! Got a new coupler on order. All's well that ends well.

At least you made it home
I am trying out one of those billet shift couplers in the 61. I hope to never have an issue with it.

Got a link? Seems like it should have some "give" in it, is it solid?

Thanks Ethan, I'll probably give one a try. Sent him a message to see if he has them in stock.

Got the billet shift coupler and installed it... its a nice piece! Shifting is also very nice, very precise feeling. Drove it to work this morning and made all the Prius's on the road cry.
Thanks for the recommendation Ethan! 8-)

I just spent an hour over at Ron Lummus's shop with my bug. His shop is only 15 minutes from my house... Just like all other famous VW shops, lol. 8-) I'm going to have him make a custom roll bar for it. We test-fit one of his regular bars to see how my ideas would work and to check fit. He's going to have to modify the door bars a bit to clear the early body and seats and I'm totally changing the rear bars for more road race look and function. Should be pretty slick, and stiffen up the car a lot. Will probably have it in tack-welded form in a few weeks to test fit. Can't wait!

Here's the standard bar, which already looks pretty cool:
