yea it had a "small" knock and I was hoping it was just loose heads or something easy

JB Weld is magical.....that being said what ya think of just plugging that one hole and running on three? w:pw

Ethan suggests a 1776 and I was leaning toward that as well

1776's are good little motors, they definitely have a little more spunk than a 1600. Use the stock VW oil cooler. And don't use a centermount carb if you can swing duals, all you need is a pair of Kadrons and you can get them pretty cheap used if you keep your eyes open. Dual carbs will always perform better than a singlemount on a VW engine due to the intake tract length. And keeping them tuned is easy once you get the hang of it. Get a counterweighted crank if you can swing it too, it will run much much smoother. Don't buy a cast one though, get a forged one or a welded OG one. If you get a CW crank also run single high rev valve springs and a mild cam like a 110. Don't get carried away on the exhaust, for a 1776 with small heads, carbs, cam, etc I would suggest a 1 3/8" header, any bigger and you will just lose torque. Stock mechanical fuel pump is fine, they are cheap and reliable and flow enough for ~180 hp, which is more than double what the motor will make

brian is right, you can pickup used kadrons or the weber icts used cheap. generally just as cheap if not cheaper than a single weber.

course i like billys suggestion of the 40hp. those motors just seem to work well.

I cleaned up the wiper motor assembly today.
I just realised that I installed the cover backwards.
