nice work dug

Thanks Bo

I tore down the 1600 that I bought from Glen at the traders show today and after splitting the case and removing a bearing it has never been bored. I took the rings off and they are within new ring specs and the jugs still have their hatch marks so I think I am going to just install new bearings, cam and lifters, and seal kit.
I am not sure how to tell if the lifters are bad but the cam doesnt look good on the bottom sides of the lobes and I never replace a cam and not replace lifters.

Looks good Doug! On the cam and lifters, looks for signs of pitting in their contact surfaces to tell if they are bad. You can also take a dial caliper and measure the lobes and compare them all to see if one has gone flat.

I need to check the case, I assume I just need to check the crank and cam bearings, and check for cracks do you have a suggestion on where to look?

yea that is the same one I was surprised how new the piston and jugs look, there was tons of sludge in it though and the bearings look like they have been wearing alot but the bearing journals look great to me

I might have a good cam if you need it. Let me know..

Damn thats a clean set of pistons. They way you describe the motor sounds like they F'ed up/wore out the pistons and just replaced them instead of splitting the case and doing the bearings too.

Smooth surface - maybe some light swirling- beveled edges- good

Pitting- hard groves/scrathes on the shaft-hard lines in the swirl on the top- better of getting a new set..
Hard edges on the base means they were probably reconditioned onced..

No Lube-a-lobe---
After talking with pauter machine shop for almost an hour - I can not tell you how atimate he was about not using these lifters- because of how many times he seen them chew up a cam.. So right or wrong.. easy enough to take his advise and stay away.
