There is nothing unusual about the snap ring being a big pain in the ass. If you can get it partially seated you can use a long flat head screwdriver and drift it into place. But that trick only works on the third tuesday of the month, if there is a full moon, and a goat has been sacrificed. I can get you a goat if you need one.
