It is moved back to keep it on the same angle as the steering colum: if you just moved it straight up it would change the steering colum angle  use an angle finder against the steering colum before you make the cuts and you will see!

None of the raised boxes I've found on The Samba are moved back. This is the best one I've found...

That makes sense, before we start I'll bolt it all back in and check the angle.
Thanks, great info.

What about the notch in the arm for the brake pedal? Wouldn't I have to modify it quite a bit too.? Don't you have some pics of what you did on yours Jeff? I'll try to go back on your thread and find them.

Yeah Eric, I cut mine at an angle too. Steering column lines up perfect where it meets the dash. Also to answer your question about the brake pedal. Yes it has to be notched, and the amound depends on how much of a raise you do. Jeff reinforced his on one side to compensate. Here is a pic from my bus to show that there is an angle to cut on the steering box raise. (I went up a full 3" on my raise that is why I had to cut the floor. If you go up too much you will have to bubble the floor for the pitman arm)

Oh and one other thing. Cut far enough back of the back bottom bolt on the frame. If you dont, you may not be able to get the bolt in there. You dont really need it since there are 4 other ones.... That is probably why the person in the pics of the one you posted went straight up with their cut.

There is a guy who makes pre made steering box raised frame sections; that is the route I would take on Elliots bus: as nice as it is!

Thanks Jeremy and Jeff for the pictures and info, that really helped me understand how to do this. I like that frame section, I saw it on the Samba when I was searching for pics. I plan on going slow making nice clean cuts and TIG welding everything since I can flip the bus on its side to weld. I should then be able to put some filler over the sectioned part, prime it and smooth it for paint. I also talked to Nate today at Wagenswest today, he recomended a 1.25" to 1.375" raise.
