I switched to a drill. I never thought of using a lathe, even with the bolt chucked into a drill it is still taking forever.

Tried that as well. Its real aggressive and easy to cut deep.maybe if my stone was a little flatter and not so coarse it would work. I think I have found the trick though. I clamped the drill down in the vice and turned it on auto and used my mini anvil with the paper between it and the bolt head.

there's also a six inch belt sander here that needs the dust knocked off. I'd spin um in the lathe

The 12" disc sander with 80 grit is what I use at the shop. I also put the bolt in a Makita drill and hold it flat against the base of the sander's table. Then I make a pass with the deburring wheel, a few passes on the surfacing stone with 180 grit wet , and straight to polish. Takes about 30 seconds or less per bolt to get the letters of this way. It's faster than setting them up on the lathe. If you can find someone with one of these sanders to borrow, it will make quick work out of the bolts.
