Pulled the tin off the engine and discovered that the thermostat, the regulators, all the linkages and brackets are missing. The engine is a 70'ish 1600 (eng# B6187232). Now for the stupid question ... In our fine Texas climate does the engine need this stuff?

Not really. If you give your motor a chance to warm up a bit before driving you'll be fine. They help the motor get to operating temp faster.

....Discuss

this is a touch subject with some. the guru's are all in agreement to run a thermostat, and immediately drive the car on start up to warm it up quicker.

I'm going to run the thermostat on my type 4 motor since I got it and it works.

22 yrs of owning VW's and I have yet to run a thermostat. The VW i owned the longest was my 64 Bus. Had it 14 yrs running a 2180 daily driven for the first 5 yrs after my father and I built the bus, no problems. out of all the people who own VW's on this website I doubt you will find many who run it here in Texas. Some say you need it, i never have my 2 cents.
