Pat went to drive our 66 while I was out of town last weekend. She backed it out of the garage and all of a sudden she had no control over the steering. It was so bad that she couldn't get the car back into the garage. Here is what I found:

I determined that one of the bolts holding the steering wheel shaft to the steering box had been out for some time and that we had been driving the car with only one bolt holding the wheel to the box. With the car being lowered like it is, more stress than normal eventually took its toll on the steering coupling disc. It was a blessing that Pat did not make it out of the driveway and was driving down the highway.

Anyhow, the fix was easy. Went to Kermit's and got a new disc w/locking hardware and put it back together yesterday afternoon. We are back on the road again  .

Wow, glad she dodged a tragedy and is ok .... Did you get a original type or the red kind? and how much ? I need to get one and was wondering Kermits cost.

Went with the red one because it was what Kermit had hanging on the wall. Kermit had a kit and then he had just the disc. Kermit sold me the kit for the same price as the disc only. The only difference was the kit had the 4 bolts, 8 flat washers and the 4 locking nuts. It was just over ten bucks with tax.
