You won't believe it but my dad used to go by the rule that two inches of ice would support any car. We drove onto the lakes quite often when the ice was clear enough you could see the bottom. Only ever fell thru one time with a tractor plowing snow off a pond for an ice skating party. Besides bugs float remember

Two inches of ice might support a Bug - if you don't wear heavy boots  The ice is 6-8 inches on most lakes I'm fishing on right now.

I caught these "lunkers" out on Green Lake Friday night. We took home about 50-60 smelt - great pan-fried. I doubled up and caught these dudes at the same time, which doesn't happen too often.

We fished in about 45 feet of water with Hali jigs, spikes (little red grub) and a smelt light. BTW: the smelt light is powered by the battery out of my hibernating Bug  There were so many smelt you could see them three feet down the hole; I caught a few sight fishing, which is fun.

It's been holy-shit cold. Today was a balmy 18 degrees. I hope to get the sled out tomorrow.
