Thanks x10.

Hey, anyone have good or bad experiences with gas tank sealer kits?

Eastwood sells a product for around $50. Product description says it's a simple process, which is ad-speak for pain in the ass. Looks like I'd also have to pick up Muriatic Acid and Acetone from the hardware store; I'll probably be put on a Homeland Security watch list or the local cops will think I'm running a meth lab :redguy:

Sounds like a lot of slopping around with chemicals in the garage, but maybe the results are worth the lost brain cells :hillbilly:

There is a place in town that will do the dirty work - not sure how many bills that would cost. Of course, I could go the ultimate route: Wolfsburg West sells a fuel tank/powder coated for $129 - and I know they put out a great product.

Thanks. I just read the Tech post on POR15 - don't you love idiots like me that don't bother looking before posting up their questions

I saw the step-by-steps. Sounds like you didn't like the Eastwood kit? Didn't work as well as you thought or just a pain in the ass to use?

The tank is in pretty good shape (no pinholes, etc.) just typical crap/rust on the bottom. I think sucking up this crap (plugging up filter before electric fuel pump) might be the root problem behind some of my fuel issue. The fuel regulator seems dialed way up just to get 3 psi of go-juice to the Webers.

LOLOLOL, i buy gallons of muriatic acid all the time, they are probably watching me right now.

I did POR's version, "standard issue" or something like that. I wish I knew about the wonders of HCl back then, that stuff is awesome(i wouldn't use it indoors). The POR did a great job coating everything inside and it dried to a real hard, smooth finish pretty quickly too. My tank is still a born again virgin, I'll report back after I actually put some gas in it and get some drive time under my belt. So far I'm impressed with it.

Cool. Hope all your hard work sealed the deal for your tank. I won't tackle this particular project until it least cracks 50 degrees around here - which might be June. Any words of advice if I go the DYI route?

Thanks. I read your step-by-step on using POR 15 on your tank. So I shouldn't do this project watching the ball game and smoking a cigar in the living room? :hillbilly: Nor should I tell my wife I'm using her hairdryer on a gas tank.

Is there a greater than "standard" issue POR15? I'd be interested in knowing how it worked out for you once you've done some drive time.

Once I can feel my fingers out in the garage - still about 30 today - I'm going to tackle the gas tank (junk/rust peel on the bottom).
I checked with a local shop to Re-Nu (sp?) the tank. Guy with three teeth and smoking a cigarette around gas tanks told me "200-250". I thanked him and got the hell out before the place blew up. I thought that he seemed high (and I don't mean the gas fumes)

I'm going the lazy/credit card route instead of the meth lab/garage chemical DIY way with a new tank from Wolfsburg West.

http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/Detai ... 111201075C

It's $129 plus $30 to ship - new tank for cheaper than three-tooth man's quote. I've been impressed with WW's products.

Other spring project is to step up to a Pertronix electronic ignition. Anyone bought parts from Aircooled.Net? They sell a kit for the 010 dizzy. It runs $119.95.

I still question the Bosch coil on the Bug, although the spark test/ohm meter checked out. I'm wondering about a Flame Thrower coil (with 3.0 ohm resistance so it doesn't burn up the electronic ignition). Any thoughts/ comments on this unit?

Hey I represent that remark :redguy:

AC.net is very legit. I just helped chuck dial in his ignition setup (glen rebuilt his 010 and installed a petronix and he has the flame thrower). The car still isn't 100% road worthy but it seems like a winning combo. I have always had great success with compufire and a blue coil, but dizzy's are a thing of the past for me now :geek:
