No idea. Vin is feb, 1959. So they swapped the pan out at some point. No big deal, if you have a legit paper trail.

I was going to say that back in the 50's , sometimes they used the motor vin number to register the car. My 56 has been titled that way from day 1 and I registered it that way when I brought it to Texas. Fortunately, my motor is original to the car.

Never heard of that one. It has a Dual Port in it now, says " hecho en Mexico" on it.
Oh well, I'll just keep looking. I just wish I could afford Booms ride.

What the heck?
You should have just told her to take them off if she was hot. :wow:

Sorry to hear about the wasted trip.

LOL- YOU tell her that. After that hot drive home, it was like I was hanging out with a pissed off tiger.

At least I caught the title issue BEFORE I handed over the money.

did one of the vin plates match the title? the one under the hood or the one under the back seat....the pan could have been changed at one time and the car remained titled to the body or the titled to the pan...not un common in world of air cooled vw's but at least one has to match....if neither match they have someone elses car and stay away from that..

Nope, the nose had been clipped. The plate that goes behind the spare tire was missing and the 5? numbers that were stamped above or below the area where the plate goes didnt match anything. The numbers stamped under the back seat come back to a Feb 1959 type 1, according to the list on Samba.
So yeah, it's possible the car is hot. Not saying it is, but there's an issue. The seller didn't seem shady at all, and looked shocked when I showed him the discrepancy. He agreed that there was an issue and said that he would get it taken care of.
