Thanks for all the tips on my acc cable/ roller pedal issues. I fixed the roller pedal slop. But I created a clutch issue, or so it seems.

I had to pull the entire pedal assembly to fix the roller pedal. Two washers and the Dremel produced just the right shims. I also ground down the larger stop on the roller pedal - thanks for that advice. I'm surprise the Dremel didn't overheat.

Getting the pedal assembly back in just right kicked by ass for some reason. Lots of swearing.

Good news: the acc. cable now opened the butterflies on the carbs to full throttle.

Bad news: the clutch cable slipped off.

I jacked up the car, removed driver side rear tire, took off cable adjustment nut. I had a hell of a time pushing the cable to get enough slack to reach the cable hook. Got it hooked, pedal assemble attached, etc. I pulled and pulled on the cable - it finally gave and I was able to adjust the clutch cable close to its original point (measured before I pulled it off).

I checked the clutch free play and it seemed to be OK. Ran out of time. Fired up the Bug early Saturday and drove without drama to the college car show. On the ride home things fell apart - or at least it seemed like I left parts behind on the road.

At the second stop I couldn't get the bug into first; tried several times. I finally had to take off in second. On the 10-mile drive home (lots of stop lights) I could only get it in first gear two times. On several occasions when I tried to shift into third it was like neutral -reved up. It was a long ride home.

I haven't had a chance to look at the clutch adjustment. I'm thinking the clutch might not be disengaging - hard shifting into gears. Maybe shifter linkage issue? Any thoughts?

FYI: It's a heavier duty clutch setup - clutch hook runs inside the tunnel. I hope to tackle the problem in the next few days. The nice weather will run out soon and I'll be jerking around on the Ski-Doo

I'd rather have parts fall off than stalling out a major intersection in town and having a teenage girl in a Grand Am looking at you like "learn how to fucking drive, idiot."

I just have impatient black "ladies" honking at me when my idle gets screwy at stop lights, I guess they are in a hurry to get their nails did.

Better hurry up with any projects you want to get done. I heard on the news tonight that the UP might get some snow this coming weekend .

I'm still struggling with clutch issues. I went back and tightened up the clutch cable adjustment; still didn't want to go into first gear - kept going into third, other same issues.

I thought the problem might be clutch drag - clutch disc not completedly releasing. I know this generally causes difficult shifting, clashing of gears, especially when shifting in the lower gears. One of the troubleshooting problems is insufficient pedal free play.

However, I'm wondering if I just screwed up when I hooked the clutch cable and put the pedal assembly back in. Should the clutch and brake pedals start out in the same position from each other? The clutch is set back a couple inches from the brake pedal right now.

Could this be my problem? Could the pedal's starting position prevent full clutch travel and thus problems with engaging or disengaging the clutch?

The Pedals should be close to same the position. I guess you have adjusted the clutch etc. Is the cable old? Is the clutch spring bad? see pic

I've adjusted the clutch cable (this all started when the clutch cable fell off the hook when I was putting in shims to take slop out of the roller gas pedal.) I solved that problem but created a new one.

FYI: I didn't have clutch shifting issues before I took out the pedal assembly. I put the cable adjustment back to the same measurement before the clutch assembly was pulled out.

The cable is not old - although it did take a good amount of pulling pressure to move it; spring seems OK.

Sounds like something is binding...
