Sweet, I like the date stamp!!!

Good job with the removal!

The crap on the tunnel is like tar paper, you can remove it and replace it if you want to check out the condition of your tunnel. One thing I would do is create an access point on the opposite side of the pedal assemble so you can easily service the clutch cable if any future issues arise. :D

create an access panel :nono: I wouldn't do that in less you had to and you can cut it anytime if it were needed. You listen to Tony and he will have you making your rear apron removable as well as your package tray. w:pw

Just wanted to start from scratch and check out every thing. There is something weird going on between the package tray and the firewall. Looks like the Po sprayed isulation foam down on there. Not sure why, but you can see it coming through some rusted areas in the firewall. Also found the pans are not tack welded in fully and the ones that are there came loose front and rear. It indeed does have a hole accross from the pedal assembly. is that original?

Well, got most of the 1/2 inch layer of gunk off the trans and rear suspension yesterday. Also got most of the tar type stuff off the pans that was sealing the pans to the body. Took the pedal assembly out and started cleaning it up. The entire area around the pedals needs some attention. When i first got the car the master cylinder had failed and there was brake fluid puddled in that area under the carpet.

Also, took the engine out and found a small puddle of oil in the bottom of the trans bell housing. Engine rear main seal? Looks like the PO ran a new brake line to the rear brakes as well and did not do a great job, so I will be replacing that.

The spray foam/insulation will attract moisture. I wouldn't use it on cars.

I figured it was not right. I think I can dig it out, but I am not sure why they sprayed in in there in the first place. I know the c pillars have some kind of foam in them from the factory, but this foam I am dealing with is not. i will get a picture of it and post it up tonight.

I have seen some horror pics of VW's completely rotted with spray foam falling out the rust holes. Scary stuff!
