Got the transmission pulled last night. CV joints are solid, but going to paint the shafts and replace the boots. Not sure if the boots are original. They have the crimped clamps with the VW emblem on them. Started digging out the inch thick bead of silicone that the PO used to seal the pans at the tunel. Found an area on the pass side that either the tacs did not hold or he forgot to tac weld period. Pictures coming!

Ok, started cleaning up around the pans and digging the tons of silicone out to start fixing all the welds that did not hold from the PO. Finally just realized he did not do a good job. Seems the pans were welded in to far back. He bent them to make them fit and they were still rubbing on the rear suspension. SO, ripped them out and I am putting in new ones!(anyone want to help out?) :help:

Got the pans out, cleaned up the tunnel and started cleaning the decades of dried up grease, oil and dirt off the frame horns.

So, where is the best place to get quality pans? I checked out the ones in Sid Fishous's bug and they are QUALITY! Forgot where you got them though. Do seat tracks come on them? The pass seat track closest to the tunel on these pans was just about all the way loose from the pan.

Where the Po bent and mangled the pans to keep them from rubbing on the rear suspension.........they were still rubbing.

Nice work! The pans aren't too bad too install. I think the ones you saw were the heavy duty ones from WW. I used the regular cheap-o Brazilian ones, and they're actually not too bad at all. I figured that POR 15 and undercoat should keep it relatively protected, at least for a few decades.

That what I did ... the others are nice but these should last with the Por 15 etc .

Its all about money. but both will probably last way longer than you will have the car.

Cool. Good to know on the pans. They will be getting a couple coats of POR15, so I guess I do not need to worry. I assume it is a pretty straight forward process on putting them in? Is there any tips or lessons learned I should know about?
